What’s the difference between editing and proofreading?
Getting a document ready for publication involves several stages.
- Developmental editing: The first stage looks at the text from a “big picture” standpoint. Here, the editor focuses on such elements as ideas, themes, organization, and paragraphing.
- Copy editing: At this level, the editor’s task deals with sentence structure, language usage, and correcting basic errors. Sentence fragments, run-on sentences, and repetition are eliminated.
- Proofreading: The final stage of analysis, proofreading refers to eliminating errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, word choice, and formatting.
